These artworks have been realised in the end of a workshop in Africo.
Africo is a village of Aspromonte, consisting of about 3000 inhabitants, in the province of Reggio Calabria, in the south of Italy. What characterizes Africo from a geographical point of view is its division in two portions: the first one is located in the town of Bianco, the other one is on the slopes of Aspromonte, where is located what remains of the old villages of Africo Vecchio and Casalnuovo. In 1783 the country was hit first by a violent earthquake, then by a big flood, that caused deaths and several damages; thesocial and hygienic conditions in the mid 1900s were despicable. Umberto Zanotti Bianco, an anti-fascist diplomat and patriot, was very important for Africo during those years. He protested against the living and economic conditions in which Africo was abandoned. In the 70s and 80s, the great poverty of the country and the protest of the inhabitants brought Mafia to be easily and violently settled in Africo's lands. Actually Africo is divided between Africo Nuovo, inhabited center, and Africo Vecchio, uninhabited and containing its ruins. All Africo's territory suffers continuous metamorphosis: a natural, animal, and territorial one. What fascinates me about Africo is the violence and the charm of its landscape, its crude vegetation, its feeling of emptyness and fullness. I observe the earth, its color, its graininess, the debris that composed it. I wonder and imagine who has trampled it, who broke it, how many bullets hit it, how many animals and how many humans spit their body fluids on this earth. |
